E-Books And E-Book Readers.

E-Books And E-Book Readers And Their Increasing Popularity.

The songs in your mp3 player are digitalized, the movies in your local theatre are digitalized, and even the books you find online are digitalized.

It seems as if the age of digitalized everything is upon us. And as far as I’m concerned, we can only enjoy its benefits. One of these benefits is the large number of electronic books or e-books available all over the internet.

However, even fairly recently, it seemed like e-books were not much part of the mainstream consumer market.

But the introduction of e-book readers changed all this. In 2007, when Amazon released their first Kindle reader, book enthusiasts all over the globe were astounded.

Although somewhat skeptical, the idea of making books really digitalized – not just in e-book materials, but also in means of reading them – has been a success.

Today, Kindle books are just as equally sought after as their printed counterparts.

But, of course, they come with many more perks. For one, the Kindle reader, which is the partner device used for Kindle books, has a global wireless access.

With the use of GPS technology, anyone can access the Amazon store whenever they want, wherever they may be. Who says that you need to go the bookstore, or have an internet connection to buy a new book?

Maybe you are wondering how many books you can find from the Kindle store? Let’s just say you’ve got about half a million selections to choose from. And with such a wide range of books, you won’t be surprised to learn that you can find just about any kind of Kindle book you might wish for. All genres and categories you can imagine, are waiting at the Amazon Kindle store for you. Romance? Science Fiction? Thriller and Suspense? Religious and Spiritual? Biographies? Literature? How-To’s?

And just in case you are wondering, there is a way that you can test how these Kindle books work before you decide to acquire a Kindle reader.

All you have to do is download the Kindle reader app for your iPhone, iPad or Blackberry and install it. Alternatively, there are also installers available for Windows and Mac PCs.

As a general rule, in the world of consumer electronics, increased competition is good news for customers. It tends to have the dual benefit of giving end users more choice whilst driving prices lower.

You can see this pattern repeated in any number of markets – there are very few exceptions.

There’s no particular reason why the e-book reader and e-book market should be any different.

The Amazon KindleThe Amazon Kindle reader has dominated this market for some time now.

The February 2009 release of the Kindle 2.0 reader saw Amazon confirm itself as the market leader and Amazon has done much to develop the market for both e-book readers and the e-books to fuel them.

Other manufacturers, such as Barnes and Noble, Sony and Plastic Logic, either developed or updated their own e-book readers so as to compete with the Kindle and to secure their share of the developing e-book reader market.

Although there was no sign of a “Kindle Killer” and Amazon retained their top spot, the increased competition did lead to lower e-book reader prices.

Which is just what you would expect – nothing unusual there and good news for customers.

So it seems a little odd that now the Kindle faces some genuinely tough competition – in the shape of the new Apple iPad – prices look set to rise.

Amazon has had a policy of pricing Kindle books at $ 9.99 or less, something which has caused problems with the big publishing houses who, understandably perhaps, want to safeguard the profits from their lucrative hardback editions.

However, in parallel with the launch of the iPad, Apple will be unveiling their own e-book store – and they have struck agreements with many of the major publishers which allows them to set the prices of their e-books at whatever level they like – just as long as they don’t allow any other retailer access to that same content at a lower price.

The result of this is that Amazon have had to back down and let publishers charge more for newly released books.

Other than the fact that this will go some way to protect the publisher’s profits, it’s difficult to see the logic in this.

Aside from the fact that more competition should lead to lower – not higher – prices, why should consumers have to pay artificially inflated prices for a digital product which uses no physical materials and is therefore much cheaper to produce than its physical equivalent?

It does appear as if Apple have teamed up with the big publishers in order to maintain prices and profits at a high level. The tactic might work quite well in the short term – but whether or not customers will accept artificially inflated prices for e-books in the mid to long term remains to be seen.

I have never used an Amazon Kindle but looking at their prices I see that they cost as much as some Notebook computers and they are more expensive than a lot of netbooks. What does a Kindle do that a comparable price notebook computer does not do? It seems to me that a cheaper netbook or notebook can do all that a KIndle would do but so much more. Please advise if you have experience with a Kindle.
