eBook Reader Devices Make Reading Fun And Extremely Convenient

Practically nothing is better than curling up in the chair with a good book to read. A book permits you to lose yourself in a different place and a different time. Book lovers everywhere appreciate the appearance, feel and smell of books. Looking at a book on a computer can be exhausting and uncomfortable, what exactly makes an ebook reader device so special?

eBook or digital readers have become very popular lately, with combined sales between Sony and Amazon reaching around 500,000 in 2008. The sharp increase in sales is largely due to the introduction of the E-Ink screen, which reads like a real book. This technology reduces eye fatigue and allows you to read under any environment. There is no glare like what you see on a computer screen, and the image is clean and crisp like the page of a real book. It also allows longer battery life, with most digital readers getting over two weeks of use.

An ebook reader can hold an almost unlimited quantity of books that could be ordered instantly using the device. This feature is available on the Kindle, BeBook Neo and Nook.

Most digital readers today are suitable for any ebook format. You merely need one reader in order to view the books you get. You don’t have to wait for the book to be delivered to your house. You can obtain an ebook instantaneously from the comfort of your own house.

eBook readers are designed to be lightweight. Most of them weigh only around 10 ounces. They can easily fit in a purse or bag. Because you can load numerous ebooks to the reader, you no longer have to lug around heavy books when you travel. eBooks are also cheaper by 50% to 75% than bound books, so reading becomes more affordable. A very useful feature in a digital reader is the built-in bookmark that helps you keep your place in the book you are reading.

Can there be a downside to ebook readers? The main drawback could be the cost. At $300 to $750, digital readers can be outside the budget of most people, unless you have a genuine need for it. The fact that they run on batteries can be regarded as a small negative aspect by some.

Whether you are an informal or enthusiastic reader, you’ll take advantage of an ebook reader. The truth is that they’re pricey right now, but they are likely to become more affordable sometime soon. In the meantime, bound books could be the best answer for the irregular reader, but as the costs of ebook readers drop we could only anticipate these devices to turn out to be widely used.

iPad justifiable for college?

I going to start college in August and on the eve of the iPad going on sale I’ve been thinking about it a lot. I’m planning on taking advantage of student discounts on a Mac Book Pro this summer for college to replace my current 3 year old HP laptop. But after reading countless reviews of the iPad and articles about how it could be a good device for students, I’m wondering if I should get it. I understand it is a tablet/e-reader (sort-of) among other things, and not a laptop replacement because you’d have to dock it to a computer to sync and things like that. With the benefits of the app store, e-textbooks, and iTunes U and so on, the iPad is intriguing. Maybe I can get the iPad and just a cheaper regular MacBook or something. What do you think? Thanks

Amazon’s E-Book Pricing Policy Crushed By Competition

As a general rule, in the world of consumer electronics, increased competition is good news for customers. It tends to have the dual benefit of giving end users more choice whilst driving prices lower.

You can see this pattern repeated in any number of markets – there are very few exceptions.

There’s no particular reason why the e-book reader and e-book market should be any different.

The Amazon KindleThe Amazon Kindle reader has dominated this market for some time now.

The February 2009 release of the Kindle 2.0 reader saw Amazon confirm itself as the market leader and Amazon has done much to develop the market for both e-book readers and the e-books to fuel them.

Other manufacturers, such as Barnes and Noble, Sony and Plastic Logic, either developed or updated their own e-book readers so as to compete with the Kindle and to secure their share of the developing e-book reader market.

Although there was no sign of a “Kindle Killer” and Amazon retained their top spot, the increased competition did lead to lower e-book reader prices.

Which is just what you would expect – nothing unusual there and good news for customers.

So it seems a little odd that now the Kindle faces some genuinely tough competition – in the shape of the new Apple iPad – prices look set to rise.

Amazon has had a policy of pricing Kindle books at $ 9.99 or less, something which has caused problems with the big publishing houses who, understandably perhaps, want to safeguard the profits from their lucrative hardback editions.

However, in parallel with the launch of the iPad, Apple will be unveiling their own e-book store – and they have struck agreements with many of the major publishers which allows them to set the prices of their e-books at whatever level they like – just as long as they don’t allow any other retailer access to that same content at a lower price.

The result of this is that Amazon have had to back down and let publishers charge more for newly released books.

Other than the fact that this will go some way to protect the publisher’s profits, it’s difficult to see the logic in this.

Aside from the fact that more competition should lead to lower – not higher – prices, why should consumers have to pay artificially inflated prices for a digital product which uses no physical materials and is therefore much cheaper to produce than its physical equivalent?

It does appear as if Apple have teamed up with the big publishers in order to maintain prices and profits at a high level. The tactic might work quite well in the short term – but whether or not customers will accept artificially inflated prices for e-books in the mid to long term remains to be seen.

I do not want to get the Kindle, as I find it too restrictive but I am researching to get an ebook reader.

However, I am currently looking at the Nook (offered at Barnes & Noble) and the iPad.

What are the differences between the two. Which one would you buy and why? Thanks! :-)

Should I get an Ipad or the new Tivo?

My birthday is coming up in a week or so and  I have the opportunity to spend some bucks.

I really want an E-book reader, so I figure why not just go for the Ipad.

Next to everything that already comes along the Ipad it has the new bookstore.

The thing is I already have an Iphone and without playing with one yet, I do see how people are speculating that its just a big Ipod Touch.

I have never owned a Tivo. I really love its UI, and my existing cable company DVR just doesn’t compare to Tivo.

I know with Tivo server there is the ability to stream movies directly to the box (which is a never ending project that I have become obsessed with), which I am now doing with my Xbox 360, but there are drawbacks with that.

So essentially this is what it boils down to.

Is the Ipad going to be a big Ipod Touch, and is it worth buying a tivo when I already have a cable company DVR?

Is spending a few hundred bucks plus monthly fees worth replacing the DVR and is spending at least 0 worth it for the Ipad when I already have an Iphone 3GS?

If I want an Ereader isn’t something like the Kindle a better Option? Or do I do what my wife wants and spend the money on a new sink? (Booooo)
